Planting
Sowing period: under glass from February - April, in the open ground as of late April.

Sowing is possible in 2 ways:
  1. Sow lathyrus early. As of February, you will be able to sow indoors. Use small pots and sow one seed per pot. Put the pots in a small greenhouse or place them on the window-sill. Keep them moist and warm, and let the light do the rest. Indoors you will be able to moderate growth by moving them to a cooler but lighter room.
  2. Sowing in open ground, preferably in full sunlight, is possible from late April up until June. Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 30 cm. Create a straight groove of approx. 1 cm deep. Place a label at the beginning and sow the seeds by letting them drop between thumb and index finger above the groove. Sow as thinly as possible. Cover the seed with approx. 0.5 cm of soil, gently press it and spray with water. Sow several rows at 30 cm apart from one another. The seedlings are sensitive to frost, in case of threatening frost during the night, protect with a fleece cloth.
If you want to leave the plants where they are sown, it might be useful to put stakes into the ground at the start and finish of the row and to place a wire netting between them. The plants will naturally attach themselves to the netting, in order to climb.
The seed will germinate in 14-21 days.

Once the plants have reached 10 cm, and there is no more signs of frost, you can plant them outdoors where you want them to grow.
Loosen the soil well and immediately after planting give them a good watering. The climbing sweet pea grows well in loose, fertile soil. Improve your garden soil by mixing it with a little compost. The climber will do best in a spot in full sunlight or partial shade. Lathyrus as a climber The sweet pea creates little tendrils that allow it to hold on to a support. Of course, it does need a support. The sweet pea will automatically grow upwards along a trellis, low wire fence or climbing support. Lathyrus can also grow through a shrub or another climber. You can create beautiful combinations with climbing roses, for example.
Care
Lathyrus is a strong climber that does not require a lot of maintenance. Just give it a little extra water during dry periods. Cut off the faded flowers and pods of the climbing sweet pea in order to encourage reflowering.

It is possible to harvest the seeds of the annual lathyrus (Lathyrus odoratus) and to remove the plant during or after the winter.

Extra
The beautiful Lathyrus odoratus is a climbing perennial plant. The flowers smell delicious!
Lathyrus odoratus is also known as the sweet pea or the scented pea. Sweet peas can climb to about 2.5 metres high.
