Planting
The scented Italian Jasmine will grow best in a pot with special compost for potted plants. Choose a large pot with holes in the base. Cover the bottom with a layer of potsherds or some hydro-pellets. Add a layer of the potting compost and plant the Trachelospermum jasminoides root ball at the correct depth. Fill the planter with more potting compost, press firmly and water immediately and generously. Your scented Star Jasmine needs a sheltered, sunny spot on the patio or decking.
Star Jasmine in the garden
Scented jasmine combines really well with other potted plants. If you love fragrance on the patio combine them with Jasminum officinale. The two together will make a fabulous duo on your patio or decking with their yellow and white jasmine blooms, lemon scented geranium and hanging roses. Or try adding some Clematis tibetana ssp. tangutica next to yellow star jasmine - what a great combination! You could also dig your star jasmine into the garden (pot and all) but then you must not forget to lift and store it before the first frosts.
Care
All Trachelospermum jasminoides varieties are climbiers, perfect for the patio/decking, with flexible shoots that can be tied in to fencing or climbing frames. Always give a potted plant something to climb against. After flowering, it can be thinned out a little with a light pruning. Bakker advises feeding the Italian jasmine regularly when watering for abundant flowering.
Star Jasmine over the winter
Star Jasmine is fairly hardy, to about -10˚C but Bakker advises bringing your Trachelospermum jasminoides indoors to a cool, light spot before the first frosts. Water sparingly. Temperatures can be about 4-12 ˚C. Bring your Star Jasmine into the warmth from April onwards and give it more water. Your scented jasmine plant can adorn your patio or decking once more come mid-May. If the winter is mild, just bringing the planter with your jasmine indoors when it's really frosty will suffice.
Extra
Trachelospermum jasminoides flowers are very strongly scented and will fill your patio or decking with their fragrance. The flowers appear from June right into autumn. The long, pointed, leathery leaves will stay on the plant year round. The tendrils will climb up anything - canes, cable or framework - tie them gently in for some extra help.
