Pink cups

An extraordinary plant? We say the gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa)! The plant has large, green leaves and cup-shaped flowers. The pink colour of the flowers makes it extra romantic. The gloxinia likes a little water every other day. Always keep the potting soil moist, without letting the roots stand in water. We ensure that there is no water on the leaves. The gloxinia doesn't like that. We put the plant in a bright spot, but away from direct sunlight. An attractive plant!

Planting
Gloxinia grows best in humus rich fertile soil. Standard potting compost is highly suitable. Make sure the flowerpot drains well, by providing sufficient holes in the base. Cover the base with pot shards or a layer of hydro pellets. Almost completely fill the flowerpot with soil and place the gloxinia in the pot. Fill with a layer of soil of approximately two centimetres and press down firmly. Water generously immediately after planting. A sheltered spot in part sun will be excellent. Do protect the gloxinias against strong sunlight and draught. Gloxinia on your patio In summer it would be best to place your gloxinia on a table on your patio or decking, as long as you can find a spot that is not in full sun. It is always a  pretty sight! Here, it also applies that you should not allow the pot to dry out.
Care
Give your Sinningia a little nutrition each time you water it. For this, use a quarter of the dosage indicated on the packaging. Rainwater is softer than tap water and is greatly appreciated by the gloxinia. A little bit of water each day is better than a soaking 1 x per week. Only water on the potting compost, not on the leaves. Until the flowering period, the potting compost must not dry out. In autumn after flowering, the gloxinia does not require any more water. Overwintering gloxinia The bulbs of Sinningia are easy to overwinter by storing them in a dry and frost-free location. Allow the plant to dry out in autumn and cut off all stems. Shake the soil from the roots and bulb. Place the bulb in a box with peat dust or sharp sand and store it at 10°C at least. From late January you can repot the gloxinias in fresh potting compost. Place the flowerpot in the living room and water regularly. From June, your gloxinia can be moved outdoors again, but do not plant it in full sun.
Extra
Gloxinia is a little jewel from the subtropical forests of Brazil. The plant will grow magnificently on your patio or decking, and fortunately also grows really well in your living room or in a small greenhouse. It is easy to grow the plant and it will flower throughout summer! The big, hairy leaves are also very decorative.
