Planting
Hibiscus syriacus grows best in the ground. Make sure the Hibiscus root balls are soaked well – place the shrubs in a bucket of luke-warm water, prior to planting. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil with a fork. Plant the hibiscus at the correct depth – the top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly down. Water immediately after planting. Hibiscus syriacus thrives in a not too dry humus-rich soil. Improve your garden soil by adding a mix of well rotted compost and peat. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot.
Care
The Syrian Hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus) is a shrub that can withstand some drought, however we do advise that in the summer during periods of drought that you do water a little more often – it will help it to retain its leaves for a little longer. Each year, winter and early spring, add a mixture of compost and fertilizer around the base. Prune your hibiscus hedge into shape once a year in early spring.

Hibiscus syriacus is a strong shrub suitable for hedging. If you prune every year, it will become increasingly dense and will eventually reach about 1.5 m high, or even higher if required. Hibiscus syriacus flowers on wood from the previous year.
