Planting
Make sure the root ball of the Dwarf Palm is moist. Does the root ball feel dry? Soak it in a bucket of water for one hour. Choose a large pot or tub with holes in the base. Cover the bottom with a layer of potsherds or hydrograins. Put compost in the pot and plant the root ball of the Dwarf Palm at the correct depth. Fill the pot with compost, press firmly and water immediately after planting. The Dwarf Palm grows well when some lime has been added to the compost.
Care
The Dwarf Palm (Chamaerops humilis) is easy to grow given that it is quite compact. During the summer to improve the growth of your Dwarf Palm feed with a liquid fertilizer on a monthly basis. After the winter, remove any leaves that appear unpleasant to the eye.
The Dwarf Palm can be preserved during the winter
The Dwarf Palm is a pot plant that is fairly hardy. It can tolerate frost up to a temperature of approximately -10˚ C. However, to preserve the Dwarf Palm over the winter it is recommended to store it in a cool place at approximately 5˚ C. This prevents damage to its leaves, water moderately during this period. Water it more frequently from March onwards and by April, the Dwarf Palm can return outdoors again.
Extra
The well known Dwarf Palm is originally from the region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It is the only palm that grows naturally in Europe. During the summer and under favourable conditions, yellow flowers may appear in short panicles on the Dwarf Palm.
