How do I plant the Chinese Windmill Palm in a pot?
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a brilliant container plant. This palm tree grows well in a large and especially deep flowerpot or planter. But there must be holes in the bottom of the pot or planter. Cover the bottom with pot shards or a layer of clay pebbles. Add potting soil to the pot and place the root ball of Trachycarpus fortunei at the correct height. Fill it up with potting soil and press firmly. Give the Windmill Palm plenty of water immediately after planting. Place the pot in a sheltered area, yet in the sun. A patio or balcony facing west or south is ideal.

The Chinese Windmill Palm in outdoor soil
The Trachycarpus fortunei does very well outdoors and can stay in the same spot for many years. Choose a sheltered spot in the garden for this strong palm, preferably in full sun. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball of the Windmill Palm at the correct height in the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the planting hole up with soil, press it down firmly and water immediately. The Chinese Windmill Palm looks beautiful near a pond, in a rock garden or border, or combined with other exotic plants.
