Planting
To plant your dove's foot geranium, dig a wide hole and loosen the soil with a fork. Improve poor soil with the addition of some well-rotted manure and granulated cow manure. Plant your dove's foot geranium at the correct depth - the top of the root ball should come to just below soil level. Fill the hole with soil and heel well in. Water immediately. This dove's foot geranium will grow and flourish in full sun or part shade in permeable, fertile soil. Combining geraniums Thanks to their fresh leaves, the garden geranium is decorative in the garden both before and after flowering. They create clumps that cover the soil. You can combine this beautiful geranium with Stachys (Stachys officinalis) 'Rosea', veronica (Veronica spicata) and Lady's Mantle (Achemilla mollis).
Care
This dove's foot geranium is an easily grown hardy perennial that requires little or no maintenance. Do keep the surrounding soil moist. Once the plant has flowered, cut back to 3 cm above the soil to encourage regrowth and flowering again. Split the plant every 3 years to rejuvenate it and keep it flowering abundantly. While this plant does prefer it moist, it can handle quite some drought so it really is perfect in the garden. Cranesbill in winter Almost all garden geranium varieties change colour in autumn. Red and/or yellow - so nice to see! Most varieties do retain their foliage in the winter but will lose it if the winter is particularly severe. However, you will soon see them shoot up again in the spring and once again form a dense foliage. Some varieties do die back entirely before winter arrives so you do best to give them a mulch of leaf litter. A nice mulch of well-rotted manure in the spring will be appreciated, and then you can also cut back last year's foliage and you will soon see those new shoots appear.
Extra
Dove's Foot Geranium is a ground cover geranium and all geraniums are classified under Geraniaceae. Butterflies and bees will be attracted to the lovely flowers. The rhizomes will spread but this plant is not considered invasive.
