Planting

Make sure the root ball of Ribes nigrum is moist prior to planting. Soak overnight in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a suitably sized hole and plant the root ball of the black currant at the right depth with the roots spread out. The top of the root ball should be slightly below soil level. Don't plant too deep! Fill the hole with soil and press well in. Water immediately after planting.
The black currant grows well in any type of garden soil and should be planted around 3 feet apart.  Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade.   Are you aware that a currant bush will also thrive in a large planter or container on your patio or decking! Prior to planting, soak the roots overnight in a bucket of lukewarm water. Make sure you use a nice sturdy container and layer the base with lots of potsherds or even gravel, cover with potting compost – perhaps with added sand and/or garden soil – fill about 2/3rds of the pot. Make a good sized hole and loosen the soil. Plant your bush at the right depth spreading the roots around the hole. The roots should eventually be around 10-15 cm below soil level. Do not plant too deep! Fill the hole with more soil and press well in. Leave around 4 cm space to the top of the container then water generously. Stand the flower pot or container in a nice sunny spot.
