The roots are shipped fresh from the ground. They are already one year old. This gives them additional strength, enabling them to grow faster than they would in a nursery pot. Plants grown from bare-root stock also adapt to their new environment more easily. Bare-root stock plants grow when it becomes warmer. These are winter-hardy perennials, so they return every year. The flowers bloom in the summer.
Place the Marvel of Peru in full sun or partial shade. Water regularly so that the soil around the roots does not dry out.

Planting

Mirabilis Jalapa grows well in the open garden. The tubers however, can also be planted in large pots or containers. Make sure that where you choose to plant them is average garden soil, not too fertile but well-drained and sheltered from the wind. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil with a fork and it may help if you mix some lime through the loose soil. Place the Mirabilis Jalapa tuber at the correct planting depth with the growing tip upwards. Refill the plant hole and press it all firmly down. Water the plant directly after planting. Mirabilis Jalapa prefers a place in the sun, but will also flower in partial shade.Do not allow the soil to dry out.

Care

Mirabilis Jalapa requires little maintenance. They are vigorous plants that in one year can grow 60-80 cm in height and width. Water regularly and fertilise once every four weeks. Faded flower stems can be removed to promote the growth of new (flowering) shoots. Mirabilis Jalapa in winter Although not strictly Winter hardy, it is possible to overwinter these plants. They produce tubers which need to be dug up and stored in compost in a cool and dry environment. Be sure to dig in a wide circle – as the tubers can be really big! They can be planted outside again in May.

Extra

In warmer climes, this '4 O'Clock Flower' is in principle an annual. You can harvest the seeds and sow them indoors in early spring. These seedlings would then bloom in the coming summer. If the seeds are not harvested, they will actually seed themselves and appear next year if there is a mild winter. In warm areas, the plant is often seen as a weed when the seeds are not harvested. All the seeds germinate.
