Planting
You can start planting dahlia tubers during spring in flower pots, planters or in the border. Dahlias are sensitive to frost, therefore, they should be planted when winter is completely over. A good time to plant dahlias outdoors is between late April and mid-May in a full sun to a partially shaded position. Plant the tubers 10-12 cm deep and approximately 30 cm apart in well-drained soil, cover with 3-5 cm of soil. Give a light watering followed by regular watering. If planting for the patio, plant in good potting compost in a pot with adequate drainage. Dahlias will bloom to their maximum capability in complete sunshine. Plants that get more sun produce more flowers, so give your plants a light, sunny position wherever possible. Forcing your dahlias It is possible to bring your dahlias into flower earlier by 'forcing' them.
Lay the dahlia tubers in moist compost from the beginning of April, at a temperature of 15-20°  C. Pot your dahlia tubers up when you see the first shoots appear and from the start of May you can gradually acclimatise them to going outdoors. Mid-May, your dahlia tubers can finally go outdoors into the garden or in pots.
Care
If you fertilize your dahlias on a monthly basis, the dahlias will bloom in your garden or on your patio from mid to late summer through to the autumn. Dead flowers should be removed regularly as this extends the flowering period well into autumn. Keep the soil from drying out during dry periods. Overwintering dahlias Dahlia tubers are easy to preserve during the winter. After the first night frost cut the dahlia stems to about 15 cm above ground level, lift the tubers, shake off any excess soil and leave to dry. Attach a label with the name of the dahlia to remind yourself for the next year. Place the tubers in a tray and cover with compost. Store in a frost-free place such as a garden shed or greenhouse. Next spring, you can plant them once again and the plant will reward you with its beautiful flowers.
Extra
If you want your plants to flower earlier you can 'withdraw' them. Place them in a shallow tray in moist compost at 15-20˚ C during the month of April. When shoots begin to appear, plant them in potting compost. By the beginning of May, they will get used to the outdoor temperature and you can plant them from mid-May onwards in either your garden or in a pot.
