Planting
You can plant the Crocosmia' corms immediately after receiving them in either the ground or in a pot. Beware of night frosts. When planting the corms, make sure that the depth of the hole is twice as large as the height of the corm. A 5 cm corm thus needs to be planted in a 10 cm hole, spaced approximately 10 cm apart. Fill the hole with soil. Plant the corms in good, loose soil. The Crocosmia bulbs can be planted using a trowel or a special bulb planter. For a large group, prepare a larger hole and plant more corms.
Crocosmia makes a great combination plant
The bright red flowers of Crocosmia' are beautiful in a group in the border. The narrow, upright leaves are very decorative. This particular plant combines well with Gaillardia Aristata 'Kobold', Asclepias Tuberosa and Kniphofia Uvaria 'Grandiflora'. This combination grows best in well-drained soil and in complete sunshine
Care
Water your Crocosmia regularly to prevent the soil around the corms from drying. The plant is fairly drought resistant so wet soil is definitely not desirable. Remove its faded flowers regularly to encourage a good growth. You can leave the flower stalks as they are still quite decorative even without the flowers. For an extra rich flowering, we recommend to regularly add plant food along with water during the summer.
Crocosmia can survive throughout the winter
The corms of Crocosmia are quite hardy. With a layer of fallen leaves or pine branches for protection, they will almost always survive throughout the winter. It is important that the ground is not too wet during this period. During the winter or spring, you can cut off its brown leaves.
Extra
Crocosmia was formerly known under the name Montbretias. The flowers grow in a double row along the stems which almost grow horizontally.
