Care
Water your Sprekelia formosissima regularly. The flower stalk will develop as soon as the warmer weather sets in, from about May. Leaves will appear only after the flower, rather like the amaryllis. We recommend feeding the Sprekelia formosissima throughout the summer with liquid fertiliser, as long as it still has leaves on the plant. This will prepare the bulb well for next year's flowering. Stop feeding after July, or when the leaves are withered. Sprekelia will see the winter through as a dry bulb. Watering only sparingly from about August. Sprekelia formosissima doesn't like to be transplanted - only do so if strictly necessary. It will form more Sprekelia bulbs if you leave it in place!
Keeping your Sprekelia formosissima (Aztec Lily) over the winter These bulbs are easily stored over the winter. Sprekelia formosissima are not hardy but they can withstand quite some cold, as long as drainage is sufficient.
Best plan though, is to store them all frost-free over the winter. Water less and less from the autumn and before winter move the pot with the bulbs to a frost-free area like a shed. Keep the soil very slightly moist and don't let it dry out entirely.
Increase watering in the spring as it warms up and you will see the new flower stems appear. Now it's time to feed regularly and once all signs of frost are past, your Sprekelia formosissima can go outdoors in your garden or on your patio once more.
