White Spiraea 'Tor'

Spiraea betulifolia 'Tor'
Produces heaps of flowers and spectacular autumn colours
The Japanese meadowsweet ‘Tor’ may produce the most flowers of all the meadowsweets! Its numerous, pristine white flowers appear from late spring to early summer. Its green leaves turn yellow and orange red in the autumn! The shrub does not grow taller than 90 cm. It is best to plant them in a group of five. Its numerous white flowers and stunning autumn colours earn this compact Japanese meadowsweet a well-deserved place in your garden. For instance, you can set the ‘Tor’ in a planter with 10 or 15 other plants. Easy to maintain and very winter-hardy. This decorative shrub is a bushy bomb of colour in the late summer, so it really catches the eye.

Planting+

What do I need?

  • Trowel
  • Bucket
  • Watering can or gardening hose
Japanese meadowsweet grows in all types of soil and prefers full sun. Make sure that the root ball is sufficiently damp. To guarantee this, place the shrub in a bucket of water for 15 minutes before planting. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball of the Japanese meadowsweet into the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the hole up with potting soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.

Care+

What do I need?

  • Pruning shears
  • Cow manure pellets
  • Watering can or garden hose
Japanese meadowsweet is a very hardy shrub that requires little care. During the spring and summer, sprinkle cow manure pellets around the shrubs. Moisten the pellets right away.

Each year after winter, trim it down to 10-15 cm off the ground. This will encourage the plant to flower abundantly next time.

Extra+

Spiraea japonica is native to Japan and China, and has been a part of the culture there for centuries. The flowers were used as garlands and wreaths.
