Spray the leaves of your plant with rainwater immediately upon receipt. If you do not have any rainwater to hand place the pot under the tap and trickle some warm (room temperature) water over the plant, the water should not be cold.
Stand the whole arrangement in a warm, fairly light spot, but keep it away from direct sunlight. The lighter the spot, the longer the plant will stay red.
Tillandsia is a very easily kept house plant requiring little or no maintenance. Just spray the entire plant with (preferably rain) water at room temperature.
Tillandsia ionantha grows in a rosette of green leaves which turn bright red as it gets to the flowering time. For repeat flowering, the plant will need direct sunlight. Other varieties are a little more difficult to bring into bloom.
The very exceptional tillandsia grows wild on branches of large trees in the tropical rainforest. High humidity levels there are sufficient to keep this plant thriving because the leaves of this lovely plant absorbs all its necessary water and minerals that way. The tillandsia's root are really only used as support on the branches. Lovely tillandsia can tolerate the dry air in our centrally heated homes but is also frequently used in terraria and paludaria/vivaria along with other types of bromeliad.
