Make sure the root ball of Ribes uva-crispa 'Captivator' is moistened well - place the bush in a bucket of lukewarm water prior to planting. Prepare a wide hole and loosen the soil with a fork. Plant the gooseberry bush at the correct depth in the hole – the top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Refill the hole with soil and press firmly down. Water immediately after planting. Gooseberries thrive in well-drained, fertile soil. Plant the bush in a sunny or partly shaded spot.

Ribes uva-crispa 'Captivator' is an easy to grow bush that bears a lot fruit. Water well in dry periods, although waterlogged soil is not tolerated, especially in the winter. Fertilise moderately in early spring. Depending on the weather, the fruits ripen from late June onwards.

Pruning gooseberry bushes

To keep the bush healthy it will need pruning. Always check for any signs of disease or damage. The first year after planting, in February cut all the gooseberry shoots back by ¾ to a new shoot. In the 2nd year keep 6-8 branches cutting them back by a ¼. Every year onwards, regularly trim new branches by 1/3 and regularly remove all old branches completely. Always try to keep the centre of the bush free. It is also possible to train the shoots into a fan shape against a wall or fencing.

Ribes uva-crispa 'Captivator' is a strong bush with almost thornless branches. The gooseberries have a purplish-red skin which is more often than not removed before eating the delicious sweet fruit. If stewed or used in jams, the skins may be left on. Suitable for the small garden too, Ribes uva-crispa 'Captivator' contains vitamins A, C and D as well as many minerals.
