The thornless ‘Thorn-free’ blackberry - Fruit shrub - Bare rooted

Rubus fruticosus 'Thornfree'
Pur. Frisch aus dem Boden. Brombeeren.
Frische Brombeeren aus dem eigenen Boden? Ohne nervige Dornen?

Blackberries can be grown singly as a shrub or in a row against a fence for support. You need good sturdy poles of at least 2 metres above soil level, with strong wire stretched across and between. For best results, plant the row N/S and the plants at least a metre apart.
Planting Blackberries
Make sure the root balls of the thornless blackberry are moistened well prior to planting - steep them overnight in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil. Poor soil can be improved by adding some compost or humus-rich garden soil. Plant the roots of your Rubus fruticosus 'Thornfree' at the correct depth in the hole - the roots should be at least 20 cm below soil level. Fill the hole with soil, heel well in and water generously immediately after planting. The jumbo sized 'Thornfree' blackberry will thrive in any soil in a sunny or partly shaded spot.

The thornless blackberry requires minimal maintenance, but it does prefer a position in full sunlight. Fertilisation is not recommended as blackberries already have an excellent growth by nature. Give the plant extra water during dry periods. When the berries are entirely one colour they can be picked, usually in August and September. You can choose to eat the berries immediately, make them into jam or freeze them.

Growing blackberries

Every year you will see new shoots appear from the ground, which will bear fruits in the following year – any branches that have borne fruit will then die off. Tie the new branches along wires, there should be about six shoots per bush. In late September, all shoots that have borne fruit can be cut off at ground level (they are usually a brownish colour). By the end of February, new shoots will appear slightly above the wire. Protection from birds is usually recommended.

Blackberries are a must-have in the summer! These soft fruits have a delicious flavour. Rubus fruticosus 'Thornfree' is a new variety without thorns. You will enjoy a high yield and large tasty berries. Eat the fruit fresh or make them into jams or compote. Blackberries are also suitable for juicing - so refreshing! Blackberries contain minerals and are particularly high in vitamin C.
