Planting
Plant Leucothoe as soon as possible after delivery, in a pot. Choose a pot with holes in the base to provide adequate drainage. Cover the bottom of the pot with potsherds or a layer of hydro granules. Put fresh potting soil in the pot and put the root ball of the Leucothoe at the right depth. Fill the pot using ericaceous compost and press firmly. Water generously immediately after planting and place the pot in a sunny or partial shaded spot. Line a porous pot on the inside with plastic, or use an inner pot of plastic material. This will prevent evaporation and stop the root ball of the plant from drying out too quickly.
Leucothoe combined
Because of its wonderful leaves, the Leucothoe is very popular as a pot plant. All winter long the striking leaves will decorate your patio. Combine the Leucothoe in a pot with the Viburnum (Viburnum tinus ‘Gwenllian’). Leucothoe is winter hardy and can also grow well in the garden where in time the shrub can reach a height of 75 cm. Combine it in the garden, for example, with Skimmia and you will have a wonderful wintergreen duo.
Care
Water your Leucothoe regularly so that the root ball does not dry out. For a good growth we recommend regularly adding plant food when watering during the flowering period. By removing old stems, beautiful new, brightly coloured leaves will appear.
Extra
There are already quite a few cultivars of this beautiful, evergreen shrub - all varying mostly in the shape and colour of the leaves. In spring, small white bell-shaped flowers appear in 5 cm long racemes, making it really appealing.
Leucothoe is classified as Ericaceae and prefers acidic soil.
