Haworthia limifolia
Bring the greenery indoors
An ideal plant for a sunny or partly shaded windowsill. This plant, originating in South Africa, can tolerate quite a bit of cold and is very striking with clear white bands on its leaves. The sturdy Zebra haworthia requires only a very little water in the winter and kept preferably in a cool spot. A little feed in the spring will be appreciated. It will then grow new shoots and form a decorative clump-forming rosette.

As soon as possible after receiving the Haworthia fasciata, plant it in a flower pot. Choose a pot with holes in the base with a matching saucer, so that any excess water can drain away. Or use an ornamental pot in which the irrigation water from the inner pot is collected. Sprinkle a layer of hydro granules over the bottom of the pot, cover with fresh potting compost and plant the root ball of the Haworthia fasciata at the right depth. Fill the pot with more compost and press firmly. Keep the soil just below the rim so there is room for watering. Water generously after planting and place the pot in a warm, light spot. Full sun is tolerated by this strong houseplant.

Haworthia fasciata ‘Big Band’ is drought resistant and requires very little watering. Allow the pot to dry out somewhat, but not entirely. Now and again, a good soaking, then mostly just a small amount – ideal. Rain water is preferable. Feed a little, throughout the summer. Ensure good drainage as standing in wet will not be tolerated.

Stand Haworthia fasciata ‘Big Band’ in a cooler place and water less in the winter but do not allow it to dry out entirely. It may or may not form a flower stalk – just not every year. In the summer it can go outdoors on the garden table.

Zebra Haworthia (Haworthia fasciata ‘Big Band) is a succulent that stores a lot of moisture in the leaves making the plant drought tolerant. The leaves are green with white ‘zebra’ stripes.

A flower stalk may develop in the winter.

Haworthia fasciata belongs in the Asparagaceae family.
