Stone Pine Small Christmas Tree with snow 'Silver Crest' - Hardy plant

Pinus Pinea pinea 'Silver Crest'
Robust character
A mini Christmas tree with snow! The stone pine (Pinus) 'Silver Crest' has a flattened spherical crown on a sturdy orange-brown trunk. In the young stage, the needles are evenly grey. Later, they turn grey-green. The tree does not drop any needles. In its adult stage, the tree grows into a beautiful stone pine! In the young, growth stage, the tree grows green round cones. From the third year onwards as they mature, these grow egg-shaped and develop a shiny brown colour.
The seeds of the tree are edible. These are the well-known pine nuts. Give the Pinus a sunny spot. The hardy tree tolerates drought well and likes to stand in sandy soil.
A unique, mini Christmas tree!

Make sure the root ball of Pinus pinea 'Silver Crest' is sufficiently moist. First put the pine in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a sufficiently large planting hole and loosen the soil. Place the stone pine's root ball at the correct depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just below the ground level. Fill the plant hole with soil and press down firmly. Water the stone pine immediately after planting. The stone pine grows well in reasonably nutritious, dry garden soil. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in a little compost. Give this evergreen tree a light spot in full sun or partial shade.

Stone pine in the garden

Pinus pinea 'Silver Crest' is a very beautiful pine. This pine does not grow very fast, so you will always be able to find a spot for it. You could plant the stone pine in a rock or heather garden. This strong pine will also do well as a solitary tree, for instance in a bed with ground covers.

The stone pine requires little care and attention. In the first months after planting you should not allow the soil around the roots to dry out. Once Pinus pinea 'Silver Crest' has settled, you will only have to give extra water during dry periods. After a few years you will no longer have to give the stone pine extra water. The stone pine will be well able to withstand dry periods. Pruning is not necessary, this pine already has a beautiful natural shape.
Particularly young trees and trees planted in a pot will be grateful for some protection against frost during harsh winters.

The beautiful needles of the pine are firm. This tree grows really slow (3 metres in 10 years), but can eventually reach more than 15 metres. The further north the stone pine grows, the lower the tree will remain.
