Planting+

You have a number of options upon receipt of your Madagascar Jasmine / Bridal Veil (Stephanotis).

  • Cover the base of an attractive planter with potsherds or a layer of hydro pellets. A pot with holes in the base on a dish is preferable. Stand your Madagascar Jasmine / Bridal Veil (Stephanotis) in the planter, nursery pot and all. Water immediately.
  • Remove from the nursery pot and pot up your Stephanotis to a nice planter with holes in the base and standing on a dish. Cover the holes in the pot with potsherds or a layer of hydro pellets. Add fresh potting compost and stand the root ball of the Madagascar Jasmine / Bridal Veil (Stephanotis) at the correct height in the pot. Fill the pot with more compost (to around 3 cm below the edge of the pot) and press firmly down. Water immediately.
  • Stand it in an attractive planter with no holes in the base - have a layer of potsherds under the pot itself and ensure that it does not stand in water.
  • Just stand your plant on a dish, still in its nursery pot.

The best spot for your Madagascar Jasmine

The most perfect spot for your Stephanotis floribunda is:

  1. Somewhere with lots of light but is protected from the full blast of the midday sun. Mornings and evenings are not a problem and will even be appreciated! About 3 metres from the window would probably be ideal.
  2. Somewhere warm - between 18 and 23 degrees centigrade. If you have underfloor heating, so much the better. Standing your Stephanotis above a radiator is not a good idea as your plant will dry out all the quicker with a resulting loss of leaf or leaves that turn brown.

Care+

Water your Madagascar Jasmine / Bridal Veil (Stephanotis) weekly to keep it growing continuously but do water sparingly as it does not appreciate being too wet - water only when the potting compost feels dry to the touch and even less after flowering is over. Feed 2x a month (March-August) with plant food for green plants.

The Madagascar Jasmine / Bridal Veil (Stephanotis) has a natural dormant period in November/December. Stand it somewhere cooler then (12-15°C) - perhaps an unheated bedroom. Feed (for flowering plants) and water again in January. The dormant period is used to form new buds.

Madagascar Jasmine / Bridal Veil (Stephanotis) is not bothered too much by the dry atmosphere of our living rooms.

Do not turn the plant - buds are liable to drop if you do.

Extra+

Stephanotis floribunda is an easily grown, strong houseplant. The thick, leathery leaf is a shiny green. It is practically speaking a succulent and requires very little watering.

Madagascar Jasmine / Bridal Veil (Stephanotis) is a tropical plant from Madagascar and is used as decorative outdoor planting in the tropics. In our temperate climes it makes a wonderful and popular house plant. The numerous flowers have a delicious fragrance!

Stephanotis is classified as one of the Apocynaceae.
