Sneezewort - Hardy plant

Achillea ptarmica
This Achilea ptarmica with double flowers is totally adorable!
Sneezewort or White Tansy (Achillea ptarmica) is already very decorative and this one with double flowers, even more! Flower with loads of tiny, white, tightly filled blooms in the summer. What a gorgeous thing to see! Also known as sneezeweed this hardy perennial looks great at the edge of the garden pond – do not plant in the pond though. Will thrive well in a moisture retaining border too. The flowers are edible, fresh or dried, and have a rather peppery flavour!
Achillea is classified under Asteraceae.

Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica) is a perennial that will be quite happy in the garden. A hardy perennial that actually likes any, moisture retaining soil to thrive in. Remove the plant from its nursery pot and soak the root ball in a bucket of lukewarm water for an hour or so before planting. Dig a wide hole and loosen the soil with a fork. Improve poor soil with the addition of well-rotted manure or fertiliser pellets. Plant your sneezewort and fill the hole with more soil. Heel well in and water immediately. Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica) will thrive in a sheltered spot in the sun, in moisture retaining, humus rich and fertile soil.

Sneezewort or White Tansy (Achillea ptarmica) in the border

Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica) is becoming ever more popular as a border plant. This low growing Achillea with its unusual flower stems looks lovely in any moist border. As it can grow fairly tall it is best planted in the middle of the border. Combines well with lavatera, peonies and Greek mallow (Sidalcea oregana) 'Partygirl'.

Sneezewort is an undemanding plant and easy to grow. Just make sure that the soil around the roots doesn't dry out too much. Cut off any overblown flowers to encourage reflowering. Fertilising heavy soil is not really necessary. Every three years, in spring split the clumps and as a result the plant will stay vigorous and produce strong flower stems.

Achillea ptarmica (sneezewort) in winter

In winter, the plant dies back above ground. In spring, cut off all decaying foliage and you will soon see new shoots appear. Sneezewort (or, White Tansy) - Achillea ptarmica - is an extremely hardy perennial and a wonderful asset to any garden.

Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica)  is a semi-high shrub that flowers from late spring well into autumn with its beautiful double-flowers. The daisy-like flower clusters also look lovely in a vase. Hang them up to dry, and they will look great used in dried flower arrangements.
This plant grows wild in marshy meadowlands and along river banks and streams.
Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica) will spread but is not invasive.
