How to Sow

Sow in the garden, April through June.

Sow in the garden, preferably in full sun from the end of April through June.
Loosen the soil with a fork to at least 30 cm deep. Draw a straight furrow 1 cm deep and label the row. Lay the seed tape along the furrow and cut to length. Cover with 1 cm soil, press firmly down and sprinkle with water. Extra row at 30 cm apart.

Seedlings are susceptible to frost so do protect them with some garden fleece if it is forecast.

The seed will germinate in 7-14 days.

Water extra in dry periods, keep the bed weed-free and your Zinnias will thrive. They love a good fertile soil but do not like to stand in the wet. Place them in a sunny spot and they will flower from June to the first frost. Keep deadheading to promote reflowering. Feed monthly for profuse flowering.

Flowers from June to October.

The Zinnia makes a great cut flower too! They will eventually grow on lovely long stems (depending on variety of course). Simply cut the stems with a knife. Great in a summery bouquet. Do keep deadheading to promote reflowering.

The zinnia originated in Mexico where it grows naturally to 1.2 metres! It has been a familiar site in Europe for 300 years now but has been hybridised many times over the years, giving us very many varieties. There are singles, doubles, tall and low growing and lots of different flower shapes too.

The flowers are characterised by their bright colouring. They make the perfect cut flower and attract lots of bees and butterflies. In short, the zinnia should definitely be in your garden!

Zinnia elegans 'Thumbelina' Mix consists of a very low growing variety (15 cm) with double blooms in various, bright colours.
