Planting+

Salanova® lettuce seed requires no prior treatment. Sow a row of lettuce every 3 weeks and you will always have fresh lettuce to hand.

How to Sow

Sow in 1 of 2 ways:

  1. In the garden, preferably in full sun, from mid-January up to October. Loosen the soil with a fork to at least 30 cm deep. Draw a straight furrow 1 cm deep and label the row. Mix the seed with some dry sharp sand and sow lightly along the row. Cover with 0.5 cm soil, press lightly down and sprinkle with water. Extra rows at 20 cm apart.
  2. Under glass, can be done in the winter using a cold frame. Fill your trays with good, fine soil. Mix the seed with dry sand and sow evenly over the top of the soil. Cover with a layer of soil to 0.5 cm. Press lightly down and sprinkle with water. Cover with a sheet of glass and place in the cold frame. Once germinated, the glass can be removed.
Depending on temperature, the seed will germinate within 7-10 days and the seedlings can be thinned and planted out after 2 to 3 weeks. Potting some up in turf pots means you can keep those ones in the cold frame a while longer and plant out later. Plant at least some young plants in the cold frame and you will have an early harvest too. Do not allow the (potting) compost to dry out. Everything can go outdoors from May in rows at 20 cm intervals and in a moisture rich, fertile soil. Salanova® lettuce will also thrive in pots on the patio or decking.

Care+

Water more frequently in dry spells and keep the bed weed-free. You lettuce will then thrive. Lettuce appreciates well fertilised soil and fertiliser added to the watering can will promote a lush growth.

Harvesting

Harvest from May to October. If grown in the cold frame, earlier and later.

Do try to prevent your lettuce from bolting - this is when it forms a flower stalk. You can notice this happening when the plant suddenly grows taller and eventually shows flower buds. This usually happens in the summer and varies per variety of lettuce. Bolted lettuce is still edible but tastes more bitter. Be cautious and harvest on time before bolting occurs.

Harvest Salanova® lettuce in 1 of 2 ways:

  1. Use a knife and cut the whole head of lettuce off at ground level.
  2. Use a rake and flip the head up out of the soil, roots and all.

Extra+

Salanova® lettuce produces deliciously tender leaves in a loose head and falls under Lactuca sativa.
