Planting
Rosmarinus officinalis grows best in a slightly larger pot. Choose a pot with holes in the base. Cover the bottom with pot shards or a layer of hydro pellets. Mix the fresh potting compost with a little bit of sharp sand to improve drainage. Place the root ball of the rosemary at the correct depth. Fill with more soil and press down firmly. Water rosemary immediately after planting. Place the pot in a sheltered location in full sun. Rosemary is also excellent for planting in open ground, in a sunny to part sunny and sheltered spot. Rosemary likes warmth and as long as you keep the plant out of the cold winter wind, it will do really well. Rosemary as a kitchen herb The herb corner on your patio is not complete without rosemary. You can pick rosemary leaves regularly in order to put them in your dishes. The leaves taste quite strong, so you will not need much. Combine the delicious rosemary with other fragrant kitchen herbs like lavender. Try scattering it over the barbecue! It will smell deliciously!
Care
Regularly water your rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), because the root ball in the pot should not dry out. Drought is tolerated well by this little shrub. For an extra rich bloom of rosemary, we recommend regularly adding plant nutrition to the water. Pruning is really hardly necessary. After blooming you may cut back the stems that have become too long. The more you harvest, the prettier the shrub becomes. Overwintering Rosemary is reasonably winter-hardy, but should be protected against hard frost. So it would be better to bring your Rosmarinus officinalis indoors during winter. Place the pot in a cool and light room (5-10 °C), give little water, but do not allow the root ball in the pot to dry out. In spring you should place your rosemary in a warmer location. Repot the plant and add potting compost. From now on you should also give more water. Slightly cut back stems with unpleasant looking leaves. Finally, your rosemary can be brought outdoors again to add lovely odours and colours to your patio. In open ground, rosemary is also able to overwinter relatively easy, and after frost damage the plant will always start to create new shoots. In open ground, rosemary is better able to resist frost than in a pot. Of course, it can never be guaranteed that the plant will survive the winter. Harvesting Harvesting period: throughout the year. You can use the leaves and the flowers. Cut off a stem. For dishes, you can strip the leaves off the stem. For the barbecue, you can burn the woody stems to release the odour.
Extra
The dark blue lilac flowers of Rosmarinus officinalis bloom throughout the summer. The flowers are a favourite with butterflies and bees. The dark green leaves are evergreen. It contains a deliciously smelling essential oil. Rub the leaf between your fingers and a fantastic smell will be released.
