Red Hot Poker needs to be in a sunny or partially shady position, although it will not flower as well in the shade. Will do best in fertile, acid or neutral soil that is moist but well-drained, and is enriched with humus. Prepare a suitable hole, improve poor garden soil by mixing in some granulated cow manure. Plant the Red Hot Poker at the correct depth in the hole, spaced approximately 50 cm apart. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.
Red Hot Poker is great for the border
Red Hot Poker adds an exotic touch to the garden. Its narrow leaves and strikingly coloured flowers make Red Hot Poker a very popular border plant. Plant it between lower plants such as Gazania Splendens or combine it with taller growing plants in the border such as Inca Lilies (Alstroemeria) and Cortaderia Selloana.
Red Hot Poker is a perennial that can remain in the same spot for several years. It is important that the soil is well-drained, especially in the winter. Cut off its faded flower stems to encourage a good growth. Tie the leaves together for the winter and cover the plant with a layer of hay or straw. In spring, cut all of its leaves off and soon there will be some new shoots growing above the ground.
The cylindrical flower clusters of this robust perennial add a striking vertical accent to your garden. The underside of the flowers is yellow while the top surface is red. Its flowers resemble a rocket! Its long, graceful leaves also make this plant decorative apart from its flowers. This plant is also called Torch Lily because of its unique flowers. Red Hot Poker is originally from South Africa.
