Prepare a trench 60-80 cm deep for the Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’. Improve the excavated soil with compost and manure. For heavy clay soil add in some sharp sand. Soak the plants in water for one hour before planting. Divide the hedges into the trench, planting three for every metre. You can also plant a double row for an extra wide hedge. The top of the root balls should be flush with ground level in the garden (please note that some land will collapse). Fill with soil, and give them lots of water so that it almost turns into a swamp. It is advised to prune the top of the hedges immediately after planting. Water after planting and regularly during the first year after planting.

Lawson's Cypress is a strong evergreen conifer that requires little care. Water during dry periods so that the soil does not dry out. During the winter a layer of compost and granulated cow manure will be appreciated.

Lawson's Cypress should be pruned

Lawson's Cypress can be pruned to any desired height and width. It can be pruned two to three times between May and August. The bottom of the hedge must be cut at least as wide as the top; in fact, possibly a little wider, so that the entire hedge receives enough light. Do you prefer a nice straight cut? Tie a rope across the top of the hedge as a guide. Don't prune too much as deep pruning is not well tolerated by these conifers.

This evergreen conifer is ideal for a high hedge and can grow up to 3 metres high!
