Prunus domestica 'Valor'

Plum tree ‘Valor‘ - Bare-rooted - Hardy plant

Prunus domestica 'Valor'
Large plums from our own soil.
Plums the size of apples? That's quite a horticultural feat. We grow fresh plums with the plum tree ‘Valor‘. The plums are as big as apples! They are juicy and soft with a sweet taste. We plant the plum tree in the garden. Alternatively, it can be planted in a large pot on a patio, roof terrace or balcony. We supply the plum tree ‘Valor‘ as bare-root stock — just the bare branch and roots. The branch is freshly removed from the soil. This gives it additional strength, enabling it to branch out faster than it would in a nursery pot. Plants grown from bare-root stock also adapt to their new environment more easily. They grow better and they're more economical. The fruit tree blossoms in spring. That's when it reveals its lovely white flowers. A crop will be ready to harvest from summer onwards in the second year after planting. Pruning is not necessary. The plum tree grows in well-drained soil. It's best to give the tree extra water during dry spells. Sufficient light is needed to ensure good growth, which is why we plant the fruit tree in full or half sun.

Plum 'Valor' grows best planted in the garden in fertile soil. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in some compost and garden manure. Make sure the root ball is well-moistened before planting by soaking it in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a large hole of 50 x 50 x 50 cm (or more) and plant the plum tree at the correct depth. The top of the root ball should be slightly below ground level. Place the tree next to a sturdy pole and wrap a tree belt around the pole and trunk. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Give it plenty of water immediately after planting. Plum 'Valor' grows well in an area with complete sunshine.

Plum 'Valor' is a strong plum tree. Each winter put a mulch of compost and cow manure grains around the trunk. During dry periods water more often. Remove any branches growing from the roots. In July, you can perform fruit thinning by removing the smallest fruits so that all the energy goes to the larger fruit. The plums can be harvested in September. Only pick the ripe plums and prune any hanging green leaves. They are not tolerant of too much water.

Plum 'Valor' needs pruning

You can perform annual or biennial pruning on Plum 'Valor'. Heavy pruning is not necessary. Prune your plum tree preferably during the period from April to September. After harvesting, completely remove vertically growing branches. Try to open up the crown. Bend branches downwards that are growing in all different directions to promote a much better fruit production. Train the branches downwards using a rope.

Plum 'Valor' is a beautiful spring bloomer. In March and April, the branches become completely covered with white blossoms. The first harvesting of the plums usually takes place in September. The skin of plum is very dark. These plums can be eaten fresh, or can be used in jam making and for syrups. Even the last few green plums can still make excellent jam. Plums are also ideal for preservation. Their flesh is firm, juicy and very rich in vitamin C.
