Planting
Phlox subulata grows well in the ground in a completely sunny or partially sunny spot in well-drained, fairly dry soil. Improve your soil by mixing in some compost or cow manure. Prepare a large hole, loosen the soil and plant the root of the phlox at the right depth: the top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Phlox subulata is great for the garden Phlox subulata flowers from spring until late summer and becomes smothered with masses of flowers. This compact creeper grows wonderfully in flower pots, window-boxes, shallow bowls and even hanging baskets. Also looks beautiful hanging over stone walls or planted in the rock garden. It forms a dense mass and therefore makes a great ground cover. It is a fantastic plant combined with late flowering tulips.
Care
Phlox subulata is highly resistant to drought and requires minimal maintenance. Make sure to prevent the soil around the roots from drying out. During the summer, regularly add plant food when watering and carefully remove the faded stems. The creeping phlox is evergreen. In spring, cut off any unpleasant-looking leaves and old stems. Protect the plant against severe frost by covering it with conifer branches.
Extra
Phlox is sometimes called Flame Flower.
