Persian Ironwood 'Persian Spire'

Parrotia persica 'Persian Spire'

Persian Ironwood 'Persian Spire'

Parrotia persica 'Persian Spire'
The very decorative, Persian ironwood
This striking tree has a slow growth, but after a few years it can still reach a good height of 6-8 metres. It will however still only be 3-4 metres tall at around 10 years old. The blossom appears on bare wood and rather resembles that of the witch hazel. Throughout the early spring it puts on a show with its beautiful deep red coloured leaves. In summer the foliage retains a dark red edge and the whole leaf turns orangey red in autumn. Practically speaking, this tree is just lovely all year round! The shrub can grow quite large, without any real top to it. Parrotia persica forms several stems of very hard wood (as iron). The Parrotia persica ‘Persian Spire’ looks its best as a solitary tree but will also be happy in the arboretum border. Decorative bark. Persian ironwood is derived from the moist forests in ancient Iran (Persia), up to the shores of the Caspian Sea. Parrotia is classified under the family Hamamelidaceae.
