Hydrangea paniculata 'Vanille Fraise'

Panicle hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' pink-white - Hardy - Hardy plant

Hydrangea paniculata 'Vanille Fraise'
Pink-red plumes
They look just like strawberries! The large, pink/white plumes of the panicle hydrangea. The 'Vanille Fraise' (Hydrangea paniculata) has large, conical flower plumes. The cream-white clusters change colour in the autumn, from pink to dark red. You can plant the hardy hydrangea all year round, provided temperatures have not dipped below freezing. The flowers bloom from summer to autumn.
Pruning is not necessary unless the bush becomes too large. In which case, prune off all the branches to the base. Plant the hydrangea in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil moist. Remember to give extra water during dry periods. A striking image!

Make sure the roots of Panicle Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' are well-moistened by soaking them in a bucket of lukewarm water before planting. Prepare a suitable hole in moist, humus-rich soil. Improve your garden soil by adding some compost to it. Plant the Panicle Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' at the correct depth. The top of the roots should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly.  Water immediately after planting. Panicle Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' grows best in a sunny or partially shaded area.

Panicle Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' makes an excellent companion plant

The large flower panicles of the Hydrangea paniculata 'Vanille Fraise' will attract a lot of attention, which makes it ideal as a solitary shrub. This rich-flowering shrub is also beautiful in the shrub border. You can fill a large flower bed with these fantastic panicle Hydrangeas and you'll soon feel the magic in the air!

Care+

During dry periods, do not forget to water more often as the Panicle Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' doesn't tolerate dry soil, its roots always need water. Hydrangea paniculata 'Vanille Fraise' flowers on one year branches, therefore, you can cut them back to about 40 cm above ground level each spring. This encourages a compact growth and a more intense flowering. What if you prefer a large shrub? In that case, pruning is not absolutely necessary.

Pruning the panicle hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata blooms on one-year-old branches. For this reason, you can prune all the branches on the panicle hydrangea down to 40 cm above the ground every spring. This stimulates compact growth and dense blooming. Would you prefer a large bush? If so, then pruning is absolutely not necessary.

If you do not prune it, this bush can grow to 4 metres tall and 1.75 metres wide.

Extra+

Panicle Hydrangea 'Vanille Fraise' is a relatively new and exceptional variety with large panicles, white-cream at first, gradually changing to a pink strawberry flush. As this shrub contains both white and pink flowers, hence the name 'Vanille Fraise'! Mmm... strawberries with vanilla ice cream!
