Planting+

You will receive a ready to use cultivation kit, consisting of a cultivation container with a transparent lid, and a plastic bag with substrate which on opening will appear covered in a white substance. Otherwise, close the bag again and cover the whole thing with the plastic lid and store for 10-14 days at 20-25°C

Begin cultivation by snipping 5 small cuts of 2-3 cm into the plastic bag of substrate. Then water with a half pint of water to moisten the surface. Leave the whole set with the transparent lid on, at a temperature of 20-25°C.

Care+

Little white buds will appear after roughly 2 weeks. Place the container in a sunny spot with a temperature of 10-15°C, although not in direct sunlight. Ensure that the top layer of casing soil NEVER dries out by spraying at least once every day with a plant spray (not too wet). The white buds grow into little stems with grey points, called 'oyster mushroom roots'. Keep spraying daily or the grey oyster mushrooms will dry out.

Harvesting Oyster mushrooms

You should be able to harvest for up to 3 months. A root needs to be twisted out completely, do not allow any of the 'flesh' to remain behind. When using the mushrooms cut the stalk 1 cm below the 'umbrella'. Tougher stalks can be used in soups and sauces. After harvesting start all over again by watering etc. One packet should give 3 harvests. Cut 5 new snips in the plastic bag of substrate each time.

Extra+

Mushrooms grow from a network of fine thread like spores (the mycelium). The cultivator you receive is filled with compost containing the mycelium. With sufficient moisture and heat, the mushrooms grow from these spores. Home grown oyster mushrooms are really tasty. You can use them in soups and sauces. Fried Oyster mushrooms are a delicacy! Growing them together with your (grand)children is fun and informative.
