Opuntia sp.
Keep a prickly pear for a botanical trend in your home!
Prickly pear cactus is a very versatile plant! This cactus flowers easily and can also produce edible fruits. These house plants can go outdoors during the summer on the patio or decking . In a warm living room these heat lovers enjoy the sunny windowsill. Like most cacti, these plants can tolerate drought and can quite easily cope with one or two months without water. However, if you want them to grow at their best, watering them fortnightly would be best.

Care+

What do I need?

  • Watering can

Water the Opuntia moderately. The plant can withstand drought quite well. Allow the root ball to dry out between waterings. In winter, watering once will do. Put the Pilocereus in a bright spot in your home. It loves direct sunlight.

Extra+

Prickly Pear is a very sturdy cactus from South America. Opuntia can even be grown outdoors in sheltered spots. You've probably seen these striking cacti when on holiday around the Mediterranean. This cactus can handle a few degrees of frost, but the ground should definitely be almost if not completely dry. Prickly Pear makes a great container plant! The fig cactus or sometimes known as the prickly pear is also very special as a cultivar! The plant forms flat discs which develop flowers along the edges, followed by fruit. The fruit vaguely resembles figs/pears and is definitely edible. Be careful when watering and potting up. Opuntia spines are easily caught on your skin and can be pretty troublesome to remove.
