Sneezeweed (Helenium) will thrive in a spot in full sun, in a loose, fertile ground, fairly moisture retaining. They can also manage well in part shade.
Sneezeweed is a border plant that will do well in the garden. Dig a wide hole and loosen the soil thoroughly. Improve poor soil with the additional mix of some well-rotted manure and fertiliser pellets. Plant your sneezeweed at the correct depth - the top of the root ball should come to just below soil level. Fill the hole and heel well in. Water immediately.
Sneezeweed in planters
Of the varieties of sneezeweed, low (30-50 cm) and mid-height (50-100 cm) wil also thrive in pots and planters for on the patio or decking. The high growing variety of 100-120 cm will however really need large planters.

Helenium in the border

Do check which variety you have, for height. Lower growing varieties can go at the front of the border. The taller ones are of course best at the back. Mid-height types then go in the middle. The large, daisy like flowers of helenium (sneezeweed) will be eye-catchers in any border and you can use the flowers in all types of bouquets or combinations. Helenium looks lovely paired with betany (Stachys officinalis) 'Rosea', Phlox, Delphinium and ornamental grasses. Sneezeweed is particularly striking in large groups.

Helenium (Sneezeweed) is an easily grown perennial that can stay planted in the same spot for years on end. Do ensure that the soil stays moist but also, not too moist over the winter as this won't be tolerated either way.

Helenium in the winter

Black-eyed Susan dies back in winter. Protect it over winter with a covering of fallen leaves. Cut all old leaves away in the spring and new shoots will soon appear.

Sneezeweed (Helenium) originated in North America and is a typical prairie plant. Sneezeweed (Helenium) is classified under Asteraceae composite plants.
The flowers usually have a thick, orangey brown centre circled with colourful petals. These flowers can grow to 10 cm across. All varieties of helenium attract bees and butterflies in abundance.
There are loads of different cultivars of sneezeweed (Helenium). Most of these come in yellow, through orange to brown and red. Then you have the various heights among all the various varieties and cultivars.
This hardy perennial is particularly good in borders as well as in planters but scattered among your grasses in the prairie patch they will look great too.
