Planting
This little calamondin tree will thrive on the patio or decking. Choose a large pot or planter with holes in the base. Cover the bottom with a layer of potsherds or gravel to ensure good drainage. Add potting compost to the pot and place the calamondin tree at the correct depth. Fill the pot with more potting compost and press firmly around the base of the plant, water immediately. Citrus x microcarpa grows best in a sheltered, sunny area. Combining your calamondin tree with other plants You can combine your Citrus x microcarpa with other Mediterranean plants to create a Mediterranean look on your patio or decking. Yellow mimosa (Acacia mimosifolia) and the patio grape ‘Syrah’ are lovely next to the calamondin tree. Flower pots with a terracotta look are perfect with these plant varieties.
Care
Pruning of the Citrus x microcarpa is not absolutely necessary. Cut back any long branches by half and remove dead or crossing branches in February. Water regularly in summer, although the soil should not be too wet. Rainwater is preferable to tap water as it is much softer. For improved growth to the Calamondin, we recommend feeding this citrus tree monthly with liquid fertiliser. Keeping your calamondin over the winter The evergreen tub plant Citrus x microcarpa is not hardy. During the winter the calamondin should be brought indoors and kept at a temperature of around 5° C. Water it once a month only. The soil should be fairly dry, but not completely dried out.
Extra
Citrus is classified under Rutaceae. Calamondin is probably a cross between a mandarin and a Kumquat. In tropical and subtropical regions calamondins are grown commercially. The unripe fruits are used in soft drinks, the ripe fruits with orange flesh are delicious eaten fresh from the tree! Even the skin is edible.
