Magnolia 'Red Lucky' red-pink - Hardy plant

Magnolia 'Red Lucky'

Magnolia 'Red Lucky' red-pink - Hardy plant

Magnolia 'Red Lucky'
Wonderfully fragrant
The magnolia releases a lovely scent and has beautiful dark pink white flowers. 'Red Luck' has the darkest flowers of all magnolias. The shrub is winter-hardy. You can plant the shrub all year round, provided temperatures have not dipped below freezing. The flowers bloom in the spring. It often blooms in summer as well.
The magnolia does not require pruning. Position the plant in a place with plenty of sunlight. Water immediately after planting. Give them extra water during dry periods.

If you buy deciduous shrubs in autumn they might not be looking quite as beautiful as usual. The big benefit of planting shrubs in autumn is that by spring they will be well rooted in the garden and ready to burst into growth.

Planting+

What do I need?

  •     Trowel
  •     Bucket
  •     Watering can or gardening hose
Make sure that the root ball of the magnolia is sufficiently damp. Place the small tree in a bucket of water for 15 minutes before planting. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball of the magnolia into the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the hole up with potting soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.

Care+

What do I need?

  •     Pruning shears/saw
  •     Cow manure pellets
  •     Watering can or garden hose

Maintenance

Scatter cow manure pellets around this shrub during the spring and summer. Moisten the pellets right away.

Pruning
Has the magnolia grown too large? Trim or saw off some of the lower branches if it has grown into a small tree. If still a shrub, just remove some of the outermost branches. Magnolias always have an easy time growing. As a small tree, the magnolia can grow up to five metres tall.

Extra+

The magnolia is native to China. The Magnolia genus is named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol (1638-1715). This Magnolia soulangeana is also known as the saucer magnolia.
