Planting+
The lemon tree is best as a patio plant. Choose a large pot or planter with holes in the base. Cover the bottom with a layer of potsherds or hydro granules. Put a layer of potting compost in the pot and place the root ball of the lemon tree at the appropriate depth. Fill the pot with more potting compost and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Lemon Trees grow best in a sheltered, sunny area on the patio or decking.
Care+
Pruning Citrus lemon is not absolutely necessary. You may want to pinch out the growing tips to encourage a bushy habit. In winter or early spring remove dead or crossing branches. Water regularly in summer, rainwater is preferable to tap water as it is much softer. To improve the growth, we recommend that you add plant food when watering, using our special Fruit Tree Fertiliser this will give young plants all they need to thrive and establish.
Specifics+
The many citrus species produce delicious fruit that can sometimes be a little acidic. However they are full of vitamin C. Many citrus fruits, such as oranges, mandarins and kumquats can be very sweet tasting and can be eaten without any preparation. Other species such as lemons and limes tend to be more popular used in various dishes worldwide, this also includes grated lemon peel which can often have a bitter taste. Sometimes even the leaves are used in food preparation (Thai cuisine). The people from North East Africa often chew on the leaf and find it delicious. The different fruits are used in soft drinks, the ripe fruits with orange flesh are really delicious eaten fresh straight from the hand! A lovely refreshing taste, even the smell tantalises the taste buds. The calamondin tree is more a cross between a tangerine and kumquat. In both tropical and subtropical regions the calamondin is grown commercially. The ripe fruits are eaten fresh, even the skin is edible and the unripe fruits are used in soft drinks. Citrus belongs to the rue family (Rutaceae).
