Planting+

Gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose' corms can be planted approximately 7-10 cm deep in spring. First you should thoroughly loosen the ground and scatter a layer of sharp sand in the bottom of the planting hole. In this way, rain water is able to drain away under the corms. Place the corms approximately 10-12 cm apart. Gladioli prefer a rich, water-permeable soil. Improve garden soil by mixing in fertiliser. In winter, you should apply some lime on the soil. Mix heavy soil with sharp sand before planting. This large-flowered gladiolus likes to grow in a warm sunny spot.

Combining gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose'

These large-flowered gladioli have striking colours. In the border you will be able to create special combinations. Try placing a group of gladioli next to Cosmos 'Flamingo' or dahlias. Combined with ornamental grasses, e.g. Japanese bloodgrass (Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron'), you can create a very natural effect. This large-flowered type is also excellently suitable as cut flower.

Care+

Fertilise regularly when the flower buds of the large-flowered gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose' become visible. It would be practical to add fertiliser to the water. Stop fertilising, three months after flowering. The stems of Gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose' can become quite heavy and sometimes need some support. Completely remove faded stems. Preferably plant gladioli in a new spot each year, the bulbs will benefit by the new nutritious soil.

Keeping gladiolus through the winter

It is easy to overwinter gladiolus corms. Carefully uproot the plants with a fork after the first night frost. Cut off all stems 10 cm above the corm and allow them to dry. Attach a label with the gladiolus name to the corm. In this way you will know next spring that it concerns the Gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose' . Shake the soil off the corms and place them in a box with peat dust or sharp sand. Store the box in a frost-free room. Next spring you will be able to replant the corms and you will be rewarded with magnificent flowers!

Extra+

Will you be using the gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose' as a cut flower? In that case, pick the stems when the lower flower opens, preferably early in the morning. Immediately place the stems in a bucket filled with lukewarm water and cut flower nutrition. Thanks to the sturdy stems, Gladiolus 'Princess Margaret Rose' is also suitable for inserting in an oasis.
Extra tip: plant an extra row of large-flowered gladioli two weeks later. In this way you will extend the flowering period in your cut flower garden.
