Planting
Miniature kiwi 'Issai' can be planted in the ground immediately after receiving it. Make sure the rootball is well-moistened. Make a large hole of 30 x 30 x 30 cm in good, loose soil. Plant the rootball at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the rootball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. The miniature kiwi 'Issai' grows well in nutritious soil. Does best in a sunny south facing position and can withstand frosts as low as -25°C. However a greenhouse or conservatory is an excellent place for the kiwi. Place the plant in a large pot with a climbing aid if possible.
Care
The miniature kiwi 'Issai' grows slowly and therefore very easy to maintain. We recommend that you feed this citrus tree with our special fruit tree fertiliser, which will give young plants all they need to thrive and establish. The flexible stems of this climber need a little support. Tie them along a climbing frame, along a pergola or through wire. Depending on the weather, the fruit normally ripens in October and November, sometimes in September. You can then cut off the sweet fruits from the stems. Miniature kiwi 'Issai' needs pruning With a good pruning, the mini kiwi will bear even more fruit. Prune the branches back by 40 cm every year in May so that new side shoots can grow. Make sure that a 30 cm gap remains between the side shoots, prune excess side shoots. In December, after harvesting, the lateral shoots that have borne fruit can be pruned back to 5-6 buds. Now only completely prune the old branches in the heart of the plant.
Extra
With ordinary kiwis, both a male and a female plant are required to produce fruit. With the miniature kiwi ‘Issai’, this is not necessary as it is a self-pollinating variety from Japan. This self-fertile deciduous climber has distinctive dark green foliage and pleasant, scented white flowers in June. The hairless fruit are about the size of a plum, yellow/green in colour and are noted for their sweetness when fully ripened in September. They are very healthy and contain a large amount of vitamin C, even more than the normal kiwi! You can use them to make jam or fruit salads. The miniature kiwi ‘Issai’ is related to the commonly known kiwi and is also called Siberian Gooseberry.
