Japanese meadowsweet 'Goldflame' pink-purple

Spiraea japonica 'Goldflame'
A truly colourful shrub
A different colour every season! In spring the 'Goldflame' has beautiful bronze-coloured leaves that become bright yellow in summer. In the autumn, these change colour again — to green! The Japanese meadowsweet 'Dart's Red' (Spiraea Japonica) has pink flowers. The flowers bloom in the summer. The plant is winter-hardy. We can enjoy the colourful spiraea again next year!
If necessary, cut branches off at the base in spring. Position the plant in a place with plenty of sunlight. Always keep the soil slightly moist. The spiraea prefers well-drained soil.

What do I need?

  • Trowel
  • Bucket
  • Watering can or gardening hose
Japanese meadowsweet grows in all types of soil and prefers full sun. Make sure that the root ball is sufficiently damp. To guarantee this, place the shrub in a bucket of water for 15 minutes before planting. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball of the Japanese meadowsweet into the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the hole up with potting soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.

What do I need?

  • Pruning shears
  • Cow manure pellets
  • Watering can or garden hose
Japanese meadowsweet is a very hardy shrub that requires little care. During the spring and summer, sprinkle cow manure pellets around the shrubs. Moisten the pellets right away.

Each year after winter, trim it down to 10-15 cm off the ground. This will encourage the plant to flower abundantly next time.

Spiraea japonica is native to Japan and China, and has been a part of the culture there for centuries. The flowers were used as garlands and wreaths.
