As big as a football!

Wow! The hydrangea 'Annabelle' (Hydrangea arborescens) grows flowers as big as a football. The spherical clusters will be real eye-catchers in your garden or on your terrace. You can plant the hardy hydrangea all year round, provided temperatures have not dipped below freezing. The flowers bloom in the summer.
Pruning is not necessary. Unless the bush becomes too large. Plant the hydrangea in partial shade. The soil should be kept damp. Give them extra water during dry periods.

Planting+
The Hydrangea grows best when planted in the open ground. Prior to planting soak the root ball of Hydrangea 'Annabelle' in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a suitable sized hole in humus-rich soil that is not too dry. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in some compost. Plant the root ball of Hydrangea 'Annabelle' at the right depth in the hole, with the top of the root ball just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ likes a not too dry humus rich soil and enjoys a sunny or semi-shaded location.
Care+
Water your Hydrangea 'Annabelle' more often during dry periods as this particular shrub hates dry soil. Provide it with compost and granulated cow manure every year in the winter and early spring. The branches of Hydrangea 'Annabelle' bloom annually. You can cut the bush each year until it's about 40 cm above ground level, other than that it doesn't require any other pruning.
Specifics+
During the spring, the light green leaves of this tree are quite lovely. Its huge rounded flower heads start off light green and then gradually fade into a cream colour. They slowly turn green towards the end of summer. They look even more beautiful during the winter with a layer of frost. The flowers can grow between 20-30 cm in diameter! Hydrangea 'Annabelle' is also known as American Hydrangea.
