Place your Hydnophytum in a pretty planter complete in its growers pot or just stand it on a plant saucer on a layer of clay granules. Water immediately upon receipt. A Hydnophytum is an easily kept plant.
Hydnophytum grows well in the warmth of the living room in a spot with lots of light. This is a strong, easily grown house plant that definitely needs watering weekly but you can leave it to dry out between waterings. Hydnophytum can feel at home anywhere, just preferably not in full sun. You will enjoy having this plant around.
The Hydnophytum produces white trumpet-shaped flowers when it feels at home. Hydnophytum is mostly grown for the unusually pretty shape of the plant itself. These plants grow wild in the mangrove forests of Southern Asia. Hydnophytum is what is called an epiphytic myrmecophytes (ant plant). It grows on the branches of mangrove trees but doesn’t take nutrients from the tree itself. The plant creates its own bulbous stem, just above the roots. This stem has cavities which in the wild are quite happily inhabited by certain types of ants which provide extra nutrition to the plant. European ants will not inhabit this tuber.
Hydnophytum is classified under Rubiaceae.
