What do I need?
• Small spade or bulb planter
• Watering can
• Fresh potting soil and clay pebbles (for bulbs in a pot or planter)

How do I plant the flower bulbs?
Plant the flower bulbs outdoors, in a nice flower pot or a spacious planter as soon as possible after receipt. Flower bulbs grow best in loose, well-drained soil in a shady, semi-shady or sunny spot. Put the bulbs in a planting hole that is three times as deep as the height of the bulb - so a 5 cm bulb should be planted in a 15 cm hole. The planting distance for small bulbs is about 5-8 cm and 10-15 cm for large ones. You can plant the bulbs one by one with the help of a small spade or a special bulb planter. Plant the bulb with the tip up and the roots down.

How do I plant the flower bulbs outdoors?

Choose a place in the border or create a flowerbed. Loosen the soil well. Plant in groups of at least six bulbs or divide about 25 to 50 bulbs across the border or flowerbed at a regular distance. The more flower bulbs you plant in the group, the more colourful the result in your garden will be when the flowers bloom. Plant the bulbs as described above. Fill up the planting hole and don't walk on the freshly planted area. For bigger surfaces, you create a larger planting hole in which you put a number of bulbs. Water immediately.

Planting mixed flower bulbs in a flowerbed
Another way to plant flower bulbs is to mix several kinds and scatter them in a flowerbed. Each bulb must then be planted right where it landed. Feel free to use flower bulbs that differ in shape and flowering period! This extends the flowering period, so your flowerbed will look nice much longer.

How do I plant flower bulbs in a pot?

Make sure you have fresh potting soil at hand, and put a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot. Put the bulbs in a planting hole that is three times as deep as the height of the bulb - so a 5 cm bulb should be planted in a 15 cm hole. The planting distance of the flower bulbs is about 7-10 cm for larger ones. For a colourful touch underneath the flower bulbs, you could for instance plant some anemones on top of the bulbs.

As long as the bulbs have not been planted outdoors, they must be kept away from frost. Low bulbs (up to a height of 20 cm) are particularly suitable to be planted in a pot or planter as they are better protected from the wind. Bulbs that grow higher (over 25 cm high) can also be planted in a pot and placed in a sheltered spot. Potted flower bulbs usually don't cope well with frost. The best way to handle that is to put the pot indoors in winter.

How do I care for the flower bulbs?
Water the flower bulbs a bit more often in the spring when it gets dry.

Bulbs in the winter

As long as the flower bulbs have not been planted, they are sensitive to frost. But once planted outdoors, all flower bulbs are winter hardy. Flower bulbs planted in a pot or planter are somewhat more sensitive to frost.

Protecting flower bulbs in a pot in winter
• Put the pot in a frost-free shed where it's not too warm. The spring-flowering bulbs are not frost hardy, but they do need the cold.
• Wrap the pot in bubble wrap. Make sure water can drain away.
• Put a layer of bubble wrap on the inside of the pot prior to planting. Make sure water can drain away. Then fill the pot with soil and plant the flower bulbs as described earlier.

Extra+

The flowers of many flower bulbs are at their best the first year after planting. We therefore recommend planting new bulbs every year - and it's convenient too.

Flower bulbs come in many shapes, sizes and colours! Thousands of cultivars have been created over the years, so a suitable flower bulb is available for everyone. Especially species with high and medium-sized flower stalks (over 20 cm high) are particularly suitable to be put in a beautiful vase as cut flowers.
