What do I need?

  • Watering can

Water the Mammillaria sparingly. This cactus handles dry periods well. Allow the root ball to dry out between waterings. In winter, watering once is enough. Put the Mamillaria in a bright, warm spot in your home. It loves direct sunlight. Do you want your cactus to flower? During the winter, place the cactus in a cool, bright location and do not water it. This allows the flower buds to form. After two months, return the cactus to a warm location and stop rotating the plant once the flower buds have appeared.

Mammillaria first grew in Mexico and USA. They are now considered an endangered species in the wild. The larger examples are often actually stolen and those are the ones needed for propagation. Mammillaria are pretty easy to bring into flower. The flowers are usually pink. This cactus us usually happy anywhere and will grow little globe cactus on the sides making a really pretty group.
Mammillaria are also sometimes known as the nipple cactus (mammilla means nipple). If you look, you will see these 'nipples' all over the surface of these cacti.
This globe (or nipple) cactus (Mammillaria) is classified under Cactaceae.
