Planting+
Plant the Gasterhaworthia in a flower pot, as soon as possible after you receive it. Choose a pot with holes in the bottom and a drip tray. This allows water to drain well. You can also use a decorative pot that will catch the water from the inner pot. Spread a layer of hydro grains at the bottom of the flower pot. Mix fresh potting soil with some rough sand. Place the root ball of the Gasterhaworthia at the correct height. Fill the flower pot with more soil and carefully press down on it. Keep the soil just below the edge, so that there is room for water. After planting, water it generously and place the pot in a warm, bright location. This hardy indoor plant can handle full sun, too.
Care+
Gasterhaworthia handles dry conditions well and only requires a moderate amount of water. The root ball should be a bit on the dry side. Give it a lot of water every once in a while instead of giving it a little bit constantly. Use rainwater if possible. From springtime to August, add a bit of plant food to the water now and then. Be sure that the pot drains well: the plant does not like wet soil at the bottom of the pot.

Water it less in the winter, but don’t allow the root ball to fully dry out. During the winter, place the Gasterhaworthia in a cooler room. That allows it to create its flower stems, but it does not do this every year. During the summer, the plant also does well on the patio.
