As soon as possible after receiving the Begonia rex, plant it in a flower pot. Choose a pot with holes in the base with a saucer for drainage. Or use an ornamental pot with an inner pot so that the water can be collected. Sprinkle a layer of hydro granules over the bottom of the pot, cover with fresh potting compost and plant the root ball of the Begonia rex at the correct depth. Fill with compost, allowing sufficient space at the top for watering and press firmly. Water generously after planting and place the pot in a cool place in partial shade. Avoid a sunny windowsill as direct sunlight could cause leaf-burn.
Always keep the compost moderately moist, never let it completely dry out. During the growing period add some plant food when watering on a regular basis. This leaf begonia loves a high humidity. Preferably choose a cooler, light spot and not above the central heating radiator.
The velvety, heart-shaped leaves of begonia Rex-hybrids are beautiful. The foliage is fabulous, each leaf is slightly hairy with various shades of green, pink, silver or dark purple with contrasting coloured veins. The colours appear to change in different lights. The leaves can measure up to 30 cm long. Sometimes you can discover small, rather insignificant pink flowers between the large leaves. It is advisable to remove them as they can weaken the plant. The name of the species ‘rex’ means king, that’s why this colourful indoor plant could be very well known as ‘King Begonia’.
