Dwarf tree ferns Blechnum 'Silver Lady'

Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady'
Just like a tree!
The feather-shaped leaves are striking! When the strong 'Silver Lady' gets a bit older, it grows a true stem. The houseplant looks like a tree fern! The fern is easy to care for. Always keep the potting soil moist, without letting the plant stand in water. Spray the leaves occasionally. That way, they won't dry out. Place the plant in full or partial shade.

Planting+

The fern is supplied in a standard nursery pot. You can pot up to a larger planter using humus-rich potting compost, or stand the pot as it is in an attractive planter. If not it can be stood on a saucer: water may only be allowed to remain temporarily in the saucer. Ony add more water once it has evaporated or been absorbed. Water again only when the saucer is empty. Keep the soil moist.

Choose a warm place for your dwarf tree fern Blechnum gibbum with no direct sunlight on the plant and preferably not below 15 degrees Celsius. The plant will require less water in cooler surroundings.

Care+

The dwarf tree fern (Blechnum gibbum) is a real jungle plant and really does not like direct sunlight! Blechnum gibbum prefers moist air. We recommend misting the leaves regularly with rainwater to preserve the beautiful foliage and it helps to prevent the edge of the leaves from drying out and curling if the air is too dry. This plant does not like too strong a fertiliser, so we recommend halving the dosage suggested on the (liquid) fertiliser packets for green houseplants.
In the summer months, when night temperatures rise above 12° C, the plant can be moved to a sheltered spot in the shade on the patio, but this is not necessary. In September take the fern back indoors.
Water less in the winter keeping the plant slightly drier. Wait until spring to resume watering and feeding.

Extra+

Blechnum gibbum is a tropical version of the deer fern (Blechnum spicant), which is a fern that grows wild in North West Europe. This species is originally from New Caledonia, a tropical archipelago northeast of Australia. The older plants of Blechnum gibbum, there are real tree ferns up to a meter or two high! A leaf can be 90 cm long and 20 cm wide.
Blechnum gibbum is a member of the Blechnaceae (Blechnaceae).
