Dragon tree Dracaena 'Surprise' XL 3 stems

Dracaena fragrans 'Surprise'
Tropical dragon tree
This dragon tree looks just like a palm tree. Three strong stems with white and green striped leaves. An eye-catching and easy-to-care-for house plant! We are big fans. Taking care of this house plant is a piece of cake! Water the plant weekly. The Dracaena has a dormant period in November and December. During this period, the plant only needs to be watered occasionally. In the summer, you can start to water it more again. The leaves should also be sprayed occasionally. This prevents the leaf edges from drying out. The plant does like light, but not strong, midday sunshine.

The ideal spot for your Dracaena

Care+

Keep your Dracaena growing well with a weekly watering - add plant food for leafy plants to the water fortnightly. Water twice a week in the warm summer growing season but do wait until the compost feels dry to the touch. Dracaena (Dracaena fragrans) 'Surprise' goes naturally into dormancy in November and December. During this time reduce watering, keep the plants on the dry side and stop feeding. Continue as before after the dormant period is past.

In living rooms with humidity below 50%, it is beneficial to spray once or twice daily. If your tap water is hard we recommend using rain water or cooled boiled water to avoid lime marks spoiling the appearance of the leaves.

This plant will grow naturally towards the light. This can easily be prevented, by rotating the plant by a quarter turn every month.

Here's a tip: stand your plant pot and saucer on a wheeled base or turntable for easy movement.

Extra tips

Although a fairly large plant, the Dracaena fragrans 'Surprise' will appreciate being stood outdoors on a warm but rainy day. It will really perk up after a shower.

As in its natural habitat, it will regularly lose its lower leaves - do not worry if they turn yellow and drop off, as long as it continues to make new ones.

Remember all of the above and you can keep your Dracaena (Dracaena fragrans) ‘Surprise’ healthy and looking fresh for a long time.

Extra+

Dracaena fragrans is an easily grown and sturdy houseplant.

The Dracaena is originally from the tropics of Africa - from the Sudan to Mozambique and from Angola to the Ivory Coast. It is used in those regions as a decorative outdoor plant in public places but in temperate climes like ours the Dracaena fragrans ‘Surprise’ makes a very popular houseplant.

Dracena belongs to the lily family (Asparagace).
