As soon as possible after receiving the Double Early Tulip bulbs plant them in the garden, or in pots for the patio or on the decking. If not they must be kept in a frost-free area. Bulbs planted in a flower pot are not usually frost resistant. Plant the bulbs in a planting hole that is three times as deep as the height of the bulbs. A bulb of 5 cm should be planted in a 15 cm deep hole. The planting distance is about 10 cm apart. Loosen the soil well and plant the bulbs with the point facing upwards. Refill the planting hole with soil. The more flower bulbs planted, the greater effect the flowers will give. Plant the tulips in groups of at least 6 bulbs, or divide about 25 to 50 flower bulbs evenly over the garden border or flower bed.
Double Early tulips in a pot
A great idea is to plant groups of these Double Early tulips in patio planters and window-boxes. The full flowers give a spectacular effect. Make sure you use fresh potting compost and put a layer of gravel or hydro granules at the bottom of the pot. Place the bulbs in a planting hole three times as deep as the height of the bulb. A bulb of 5 cm should be planted in a 15 cm deep hole. The planting distance of the Double Early tulips in a pot is about 7 cm.
The flowers of the Double Early tulips are at their best in the first year. That’s why we recommend each year adding new and extra bulbs to make your borders and pots even more colourful. These tulips grow best in loose, well-drained soil in a spot in full sun. To protect the bulbs grown in a pot against frost, place the pot in a frost-free area or cover it with bubble wrap. Water during dry periods.
Tulip bulbs that have not yet been planted in the garden are sensitive to frost but once planted out in the garden, they are perfectly hardy.
Tulips planted in pots are more sensitive and will need to be protected in one of the following ways:
- Store your potted tulips in a frost-free area that doesn't get too warm - they do need the cold.
- Wrap the pot(s) in bubble wrap for extra protection.
- If you line their pot(s) with bubble wrap before adding soil and planting your bulbs, your tulips will already have some protection.
The Double Early tulip flowers start to bloom from the beginning of April. Our mix consists of white, yellow, red and pink coloured tulips. Each stem produces a flower with a wealth of colourful petals. A green vein can be seen on the outside of the petals. These tulips grow to a height of about 30 cm. Double Early tulips continue to flower even longer than the single flowering tulips.
