Plant the oriental double-flowering lily (Lilium) bulbs as soon as possible after receiving them. They can be grown in the ground or in a flower pot. Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade, protected from the wind. Prepare a large hole and plant the lily bulbs 12-15 cm deep with the point facing upwards and approximately 15 cm apart. Water immediately after planting. Lilies like to grow in acidic soil and dislike lime. You can improve the quality of the soil by adding some compost and granulated cow manure.
Oriental double lily in a decorative pot
Due to their strong stems double-flowering lilies (Lilium) grow very well in flower pots and planters on the patio. In a pot arrange the bulbs 12-15 cm deep and about 12 cm apart. Try planting them together with other summer bulbs such as Brodiaea ‘Rudy’ which will combine well with the beautiful colour of the lilies.
The oriental double-flowering lily (Lilium) can remain in the same place for several years. Lilies love to face the warm sun, but it is important to keep their ‘feet cool’. To do this plant low growing plants around the lilies so that the soil remains cool. Every two weeks during the flowering period of double-flowering lily (Lilium) we recommend adding fertiliser when watering. Lilies can suffer from the lily beetle, which is bright red in colour. To prevent them from eating the leaves and other arterial parts of the lily, in spring remove the beetles or eggs and destroy them. During winter, cover the lily bulbs with a layer of foil or fallen leaves to protect them from frost. Lily bulbs grown in pots can be overwintered in a frost-free area.
Keeping the oriental lilies over the winter
Double-flowering lily (Lilium) bulbs are hardy but we do recommend protecting them in severe winters. A covering of leaf litter or straw should suffice. Potted bulbs are more vulnerable so store them frost-free, in the pot. This should help your lilies survive the winter.
Your double-flowering lilies (Lilium) will also appreciate a good mulch of compost/well-rotted manure over the winter for better growth of the bulbs next season.
The flowers of the double oriental lily have no pollen. The narrow dark green leaves stand in whorls round the sturdy stems. This beautifully coloured lily makes a wonderful cut flower that lasts a long time in a vase. The best time to pick the flowers is preferably early morning. Immediately place the stems in a vase of water and add cut flower food. Thanks to their sturdy stems they work well with the use of oasis. Change the water every day.
