Your dahlia tubers can be planted immediately upon receipt. Beware of frost as they are not hardy. End of April to mid-May is best if planting in the garden. Prepare a large hole and improve the soil with well rotted manure. Carefully plant the tubers and cover with 3-5 cm of soil. Press lightly down and water immediately. Dahlias bloom most profusely in a sunny spot.
Forcing your dahlias
It's possible to 'withdraw' dahlia tubers to flower extra early. To do this, lay them in moist compost from the beginning of April at 15-20 °C. When shoots appear, pot them up in potting compost. In early May acclimatise them to the outdoors and from mid-May plant them in the garden or in a pot.
Feed on a monthly basis and your patio dahlia 'Melody® Pink Allegro' will bloom right through to the first frosts. Snip off overblown blooms to encourage reflowering. Make sure that the soil does not dry out during dry periods.
Dahlia tubers can easily be overwintered. If you want to do this, dig up the plants after the first night frost. Then cut all stems off 15 cm above the tuber. Attach a label with the name of the dahlia to remind yourself for the next year. Shake the soil from the dahlia tubers and place in a box with dry compost or sharp sand. Store the dahlia tubers in a frost free area such as a garden shed or greenhouse. Next spring you can plant the dahlia tubers again and they will reward you with their wonderful flowers!
Dahlia 'Pink Melody® Allegro’ is a very beautiful cultivar! It is a representative of Group 5 - Decorative Dahlias.
